Checkerboard Floors + Verde Marble: A Classic with a Twist
Updated May 2025 by C. DePina Kitchens + Interiors.
There’s something undeniably chic about checkerboard floors—timeless yet bold, rooted in tradition but still playful. They instantly elevate a space, adding just the right dose of drama and personality.
When I first designed this hallway [shown in 1st photo, yes, back in 2020], I knew I wanted it to feel charming and grounded, with a nod to classic design elements. Checkerboard flooring was the perfect way to strike that balance. Our clients wanted it to mimic the floors of a certain hall at the Louvre. So chic.
Why Verde Marble?
While black-and-white is the standard checkerboard combo, I opted for something a little more unexpected: soft cream paired with deep Verde Alpi marble. The subtle veining and rich tone of the green stone felt both elegant and earthy. The polished finished added a layer of formality and elegance.
Checkerboard Isn’t Just for the Entry
We’ve used this look in bathrooms, laundry rooms, and even kitchens when clients want to make a statement without relying on bold cabinetry or wallpaper. It’s a high-impact pattern that plays surprisingly well with others—especially when the materials and colors are chosen with care.
Tips for Designing with Checkerboard Floors
Scale Matters: In small spaces, go with smaller tiles (like this 12x12); in larger rooms, oversized stone or elongated rectangles can feel more tailored and architectural.
Offset the Drama: Keep cabinetry or walls more restrained if your floor is doing the talking.
Don’t Limit Yourself to Marble: Limestone, porcelain, terrazzo, and even painted wood can work beautifully depending on the vibe you’re after.
