What Comes First in a Kitchen Renovation? (Hint: It’s Not Cabinets OR Countertops)

When homeowners start planning a kitchen renovation, one of the first decisions they often stress over is:

“Should we choose the cabinets first, or the countertops?”

But here’s the truth I share with all my clients:

Neither comes first. The design direction comes first.

1. Start with the overall vision.

Before selecting specific materials, you need clarity on the big-picture goals for the space:

  • Do you want a light, airy kitchen or something dramatic and moody?

  • Are you drawn to sleek, modern lines or timeless, traditional details?

  • Will your focal point be bold veined stone, rich wood cabinetry, or a patterned backsplash?

This early clarity informs every material choice, and ensures the final space feels intentional and cohesive.

2. Then: Lock in layout + cabinetry.

Once the design direction is set, the cabinetry layout is the next critical step. Why?

Because:

  • It defines your zones for cooking, prep, storage, and seating

  • It determines appliance placement and ventilation requirements

  • It gives you exact dimensions to guide countertop and backsplash selections

Cabinetry typically represents the biggest visual and financial component, so it’s important to choose wisely — and early — while still allowing room for your design direction to influence style and finish.

3. Countertops come after cabinetry — not before [usually].

It’s tempting to fall in love with a countertop slab early on, but without knowing your cabinetry finish or kitchen dimensions, you may find:

  • The slab doesn’t work dimensionally

  • The pattern feels too bold (or too subtle) against your cabinets

  • The undertones clash with your other selections

By waiting until your cabinetry style and color are confirmed, you can shop for counters with purpose, and make selections that truly elevate the space.

THIS IS MY Recommended Order of Operations:

  1. Establish your design direction (with help if needed — this is what I do best)

  2. Finalize your layout + cabinetry selections

  3. Select countertops + backsplash

  4. Layer in fixtures, hardware, and paint

  5. Bring it all to life with styling + lighting
